Tottori Sand Museum | 鳥取県砂の美術館 – Amazing Sand Art, near Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan

We stumbled upon the Tottori Sand Museum after our visit to the Tottori Sand dunes. Located just beside, the Sand Museum is Japan’s only open-air museum that showcases sand art, with exhibits opened to the public every year from April to January.

The Sand Museum attracts teams from around the world to create sand sculptures with different themes. This year, during our visit, the theme is mostly centered around south american history and culture.

Materials used for the creation were, of course, sands from the Tottori sand dunes. There were over a hundred sculptures in the museum, with some as big as a 3-storey house.

Here are some sand sculptures of

The artists from around the world.

Having a go at creating art. Look at the beautiful sand horse we sculpted. Talented, aren’t we?

As sand sculptures are fragile and prone to collapse, do not miss the opportunity to capture their short-lived beauty within the 9 months of exhibit, typically from April till next January. Opening hours are from 9am to 6pm, admission fee at 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.
