Singapore to Japan – Airlines Choices
Japan has many international airports and travellers have multiple options when choosing the option of flying into Japan. From Singapore to Japan, we can choose to fly to Tokyo (Haneda/Narita), Osaka (KIX), Nagoya (Chubu), Fukuoka, Hokkaido (Sapporo), and from here, it is easy to catch a domestic flight across the country.
In this post, we will introduce some of the airlines and air routes of our Japan travels.
One important tip for you, if you plan to visit more than one city, eg Tokyo and Osaka, it is better to fly into Tokyo and fly out of Osaka. That saves you the time and hassle of a return trip.
Singapore to Japan Tokyo
Choose Delta Airlines if possible. Daily flight to Narita at 6.55am. Return flight is 4.55pm Japan time. The cheapest fare we gotten from this itinerary is $544. That’s the cheapest you will ever find for a direct flight from SIN to JPN. Delta flights are reasonably comfortable, nice food and good entertainment system.
Other direct flights include Singapore Airlines, ANA, Japan Airlines. The price are usually too high for our liking (>$800)
For non-direct Singapore to Japan flights, Malaysia airline via Kuala Lumpur is a good choice too. The flight to Tokyo is overnight and if you are an easy sleeper, this might be for you. We used this a couple of times and end up regretting as we usually couldn’t get to sleep in the air, spending the next morning wandering the tokyo streets like zombies because hotel check-ins are in the afternoon.
We had also used many other budget airlines for last minute trips (that’s when we can’t get Delta).
Scoot via Taipei, AirAsia via Bangkok, etc.
Personally, I prefer the AirAsia route as it is the cheapest. I will pay a little more ($12) and secure a seat in the Quiet zone. Most of the time, you will have the whole row of seats to yourself. Good comfort and can even lie down to rest.
There are 2 International airport in Tokyo, Narita airport and Haneda airport. Most flights fly into Narita airport and it is about an hour train ride from the city. Consider taking either the Narita Express (NEX) or the Keisei Skyliner. Do check where your hotel is and choose the more appropriate option.
Singapore to Japan Osaka (Kansai)
For Kansai area (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara), the better choice is to fly into Kansai International Airport in Osaka. From there, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, and other nearby prefectures are easily accessible by trains.
The cheapest flight we took is Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur. Many other budget airlines also service this route, e.g. Jetstar, Airasia, via Taipei and KL respectively. Budget airlines doesn’t mean the price is low. More often than not, we could get cheaper MAS tix compared to budget airlines.
Other airlines that offer relatively cheap tickets are Vietnam Airlines and Thai Airways. We had not tried Vietnam Air before, but Thai Airways is not a bad choice.
From Kansai International Airport (KIX), it is easy to get to nearby cities like Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara. Usually, we will make Osaka our base and travel to nearby areas for day trips. Kyoto, Kobe and Nara are all within an hour train ride from Osaka.
KIX is also the home airport of domestic airline Peach Airlines. From here, you can catch a domestic flight to other parts of Japan at really affordable prices.
Singapore to Japan Hokkaido
Hokkaido is one of the more expensive destination to get to, partly due to air tickets price because there is hardly any cheap tix from SG to Hokkaido.
The recommended approach is to fly into Tokyo before transferring to Chitose in Hokkaido via domestic airlines.
Jetstar and Peach Airlines are usually our choice. Each tix from Narita to New Chitose airport costs around $100 one way. Topup another $20 for check in luggage.
For those adventurous, you can fly from Tokyo to Hokkaido and return using trains, assuming you are activating a JR pass.
Singapore to Japan Fukuoka
We hadn’t tried flying into Fukuoka directly, although there are many airlines servicing this route. For eg, Singapore Airlines, China Eastern, etc. Usually, we will take a domestic flight (Jetstar/Peach) from/to Tokyo.
Fukuoka Airport is the fourth busiest airport in Japan and is located just a 10 minutes train ride from the city of Hakata, making commuting so much easier.
Singapore to Japan Okinawa
There is no direct flight from Singapore to Okinawa, except for some rare chartered flights that are offered to travel agencies. This makes Singapore to Japan Okinawa a less desired destination for many Singaporeans.
Here are some of the routes that we had taken
- SG -> Tokyo (spend a few days here) -> Okinawa (Peach airline) -> Hong Kong (Transit, Peach airline) -> SG (Jetstar)
- SG -> Taipei (transit, Scoot) -> Okinawa (Peach airline)
Peach airline is usually the preferred choice when flying from other parts of Japan (eg Osaka, Tokyo) into Okinawa. Peach also has international routes from Hong Kong and Taipei.
